2022 Mexico Beach Gollywhopper Recap

The 10th Annual Mexico Beach GollyWhopper held this past weekend was a huge success with a record turnout. We had 83 boats and 26 youth enter the tournament and great participation in the separate target division. There was $29,318 paid out to the 18 winners.

The City of Mexico Beach and new city manager, Doug Baber, and Public Works Director Tommy Davis, along with numerous volunteers worked extremely hard to help coordinate the tournament with the new bathrooms and pavilion literally finished hours before the Captain’s Party on the 17th. The facility worked great and will also be where the MBARA tournament is hosted on July 29-30th. Make sure to check out their exciting new divisions and format here.
The fishing in Mexico Beach was as good as ever during the tournament. Red Snapper fishing remains excellent with some huge fish weighed in and the grouper division saw a number of exceptional fish weighed in and the highest winning averages ever seen. King Mackerel were a little on the small side except for the 34lb winning fish caught by Captain Todd Krause. His son Beau also on the Royal Flush won the youth king as well.
There were grouper weighed in that would have won first place most years that didn’t even place this year. Captain Kyle Cooper and the CoopdeVille won the big fish with 39.64 pounds.
2nd place was Sodfather and Captain Billy Jackson with an 39.17 pound fish and they also had youth angler Trevor Haines win the youth division with a big 19.49 pound red grouper. (Any legal grouper species is allowed to be weighed).
Captain Will Jones and the Keepin' Up slayed the big grouper with this incredibly impressive catch and a nice 3rd place fish.
Captain David Traylor aboard the Fish Whisperer was able to win first place Red Snapper in back to back years. He barely beat out his friend and 2nd place finisher, Sails Call with Captain Kyle Tatum by just .012 pounds. Playing Hooky placed 3rd with a 25.95lb fish.
The 3 youth division winners are pictured below with their nice trophies. Daniel Sapp on left won Red Snapper, Trevor Haines in Grouper, and Beau Krause with 1st in King.
The final leaderboard and more of our great volunteers in the last picture. Kimberly Shoaf, Lindsey Cathey, and Amber Childs. Amber's husband Steven was the head cook once again and did an amazing job and the tournament wouldn't happen with Kimberly and the Mexico Beach Community Development Council. Lindsey's husband, Lee and Josh Bloodworth are the other tournament directors.

We hope to see you in 2023 and that you continue to enjoy the great fishing out of Mexico Beach.
